Two U.S. men and one woman twisted, jumped and slid their way to podium finishes at the third stop of the Vans Park Skateboarding Series in Montreal, Canada, on Saturday.
Cory Juneau and national team skater Tristan Rennie took second and third, respectively, in the men’s competition while Jordyn Barratt, also a member of the first-ever national skateboarding team named earlier this year, took second in the women’s competition.
Juneau led through most of the competition and had a high score of 88.50 on his third run, but was knocked down to second by Brazil’s Pedro Barros with a final run that scored 91.50. Rennie’s top-scoring run of 81.73 was good for third place.
Rennie also took third at the Vans Park Series stop in Sao Paulo, Brazil, three weeks ago.
The skaters were competing at a brand new terrain park in the shadow of Olympic Stadium in Montreal. The top eight skaters made the finals and had four runs with the top score counting in the standings.
On the women’s side, Barratt nailed a stellar run to take the lead with a score of 85.30 halfway through the competition only to have Brazil’s Yndiara Asp immediately follow her with an even better run. Asp’s 87.20 made her the one to beat as the skaters started their third runs.
No one could, and Asp remained in first and Barratt in second. Finland’s Lizzie Armanto overtook U.S. skater Grace Marhoefer and bumped her to fourth place.
As a 17-year-old and last-minute addition to the roster, Barratt made her professional debut at the X Games in 2016 and won a bronze medal. She also took silver at the X Games Minneapolis in 2017. Her third-place finish in Montreal improves upon fourth place in Sao Paolo and fifth place in Shanghai so far this season.
Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut in 2020. The results from this year’s world championships in September as well as results from select competitions between May of this year and June 2020 will determine which athletes will qualify to represent the U.S. in Tokyo. There will be a total of 40 men and 40 women competing, 20 per gender in both the park and street categories.
