LA PLATA, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), in partnership with Missouri Disabled Sportsmen (MDS), will offer a mobility impaired rabbit hunt Dec. 15-16 in Knox County.
This annual event will provide a free opportunity for disabled hunters to experience Missouri’s hunting heritage, and hopefully, harvest rabbits.
MDC and MDS will provide well-trained hunting dogs, field guides and track chairs to assist mobility impaired hunters over the weekend. MDC’s track chairs are wheelchairs outfitted with treaded tracks that allow for safe control and stability, providing access to the outdoors in all types of terrain. Meals will also be provided, and firearms and ammunition will be available to those who need them.
These events have benefits for mobility impaired hunters well beyond the hunt. Valuable life skills are often passed on in the field. Most importantly, friendships are formed that can last a lifetime.
“MDS is a conservation-minded organization that is dedicated to removing obstacles so that everyone can enjoy the outdoors,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver. “This is one of many events that I love helping with each year. I hope to see lots of folks at the event, and with some luck, we will harvest a few rabbits.”
The hunt will take place at a private farm in southwest Knox County from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, and 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16. Hunters 11 years of age and older are welcome to attend either or both days.
Hunters may stay overnight in a lodge at the hosting farm, which offers a wheelchair-accessible restroom and shower onsite.
This event is free, but space is limited, and participants must apply by Dec. 7 to be considered for the hunt.
